A rare early edition of Latin prose, featuring the continuation by the French humanist Muret, who is regarded as one of the finest stylists of Latin prose in the Renaissance. - VD17 23:296011F - His pupil Montaigne described him as the finest orator of his age. His success earned him many enemies, who had him imprisoned in 1553 on charges of heresy and sodomy; however, powerful friends secured his release. He was only able to escape the same charges in Toulouse by fleeing. - Our copy is compiled in the same way as the copy held by the Lower Saxony State Library (PPN VD17 23:296011F). - Slightly browned or slightly foxed, with numerous marginal annotations in old hand in places.
