Church History, composed in eighteen books. Translated into German by Marxen Fuggern the Elder. 2 parts in one volume. With (repeated) woodcut portraits on the reverse of the title page. Ingolstadt, D. Sartorius, 1588. Folio. 26 leaves, 526 (recte 522) pages, 7 leaves (the first blank), 570 pages, 9 leaves (the first blank). Contemporary blind-embossed calfskin binding (stained and scuffed, without the clasps).
First German edition. – VD 16 N 1442. Cless II, 243. Stalla 1600. – Not listed in the STC, nor in Adams, Hoffmann or Schweiger. - Nicephorus’s Church History extends up to the death of Emperor Phocas. It was ‘widely used because of the information not otherwise preserved and the extracts from lost works’ (LThK X, 1007). - With a fine portrait by Marx Fugger. - Some water-stains in the upper inner fold (fading) and partly along the top and side margins; name on the inside cover.
