Baroque Peikhart, Franciscus Joannes, or an Explanation of the Gospel of John. Based on the unanimous interpretation, in accordance with both the literal and moral meanings, of the Greek and Latin Fathers of the Holy Christian Catholic Roman Apostolic Churches, composed and delivered in the regular Sunday sermons of the High Cathedral Chapter of the Metropolitan Churches at St Stephen’s in Vienna. With a woodcut title vignette. Munich and Ingolstadt, Grätz, 1753. Folio. 4 leaves, 728 pp., 10 leaves. Blind-stamped pigskin binding with 2 clasps (somewhat stained and scuffed). A detailed and comprehensive exegesis of the Gospel of John. F. Peikhart was an Austrian Jesuit and preacher, and served for many years as a cathedral preacher at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. For Baroque preachers such as Peikhart, the Gospel of John was of particular significance. Whilst the first three Gospels (the Synoptic Gospels) tend to describe the deeds of Jesus, the Gospel of John is regarded as the most theologically profound, emphasising the divine nature of Jesus – a central theme of Baroque piety. - Partially discoloured, name on inside cover.
