The story of two notorious highwaymen: Johann Sheppard, an Englishman, and Ludwig Dominicus Cartouche, a Frenchman. Translated from the English and French. With 2 copperplate engravings. Frankfurt and Leipzig, no publisher given, 1770. 126 pp. Contemporary leather binding with a spine label and rich gilt decoration, as well as three-sided red edging.
Fourth edition, rare. – Not listed in Holzmann-Boh., Hayn-G. and others. – The two copperplate engravings depict portraits of the villains. The life of the highwayman Cartouche served as the basis for a French cape-and-sword film. – A further, additional copperplate engraving depicting an execution scene is bound in as the final leaf. - This fourth edition differs from the earlier editions in that the copperplate engravings are reproduced in mirror image and in other features (text layout, vignettes, initials). - Faded publisher’s stamp on the title page, some slight, unobtrusive water-stains; overall, a very good copy.
