Description
Emblemata Hooghe, Romenyn de Aesop in Europe. A series of 35 (of 40?) instalments, each comprising 8 pages, with a further 35 large, emblematic title vignettes. Amsterdam, Petzold, 1701. Large 8vo. approx. 280 pp. (modern) bound. One of the most significant and ambitious works of political satire and propaganda from the European Baroque period. – Landwehr, de Hooghe 95. – Hollstein IX 204–243. - It combines literary fables modelled on those of the ancient poet Aesop with highly complex political copperplate engravings. The instalments appeared as regular pamphlets; here they are bound together as a book, beginning with No. 7. The series is regarded as a direct precursor to modern political caricature, and de Hooghe’s prints are, in terms of craftsmanship, among the finest examples of political graphic art produced in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. His compositions are full of hidden symbols and ambiguous allegories. – Partly slightly browned; overall a good copy.
