Description
Hogarth, William The Election. 3 (of 4) copperplate engravings (and 1 supplementary plate, totalling 4 engravings), engraved by Thomas Cook: Canvasing for Votes – The Polling – The Chairing. London, Cook, 1812. (Each) 42 x 54 cm. Framed with a passe-partout and glass. This work, Hogarth’s last, is based on the chaotic, turbulent elections in Oxfordshire in 1754, in which the Duke of Marlborough, a Whig (‘the New Interest’), challenged the deeply entrenched Tories (‘the Old Interest’) in their established stronghold. Aimed at the upper middle and upper classes, this series highlights the aristocracy’s cynicism towards electoral politics and depicts their attempts to manipulate the populace. It depicts politicians from both parties using slogans, flattery, bribery, alcohol, food and trinkets to exploit the populace in the interests of their own undemocratic ambitions. – Missing the first sheet: *The Humours of an Election*. – Includes: The same artist, “A midnight modern Conversation”. 36 x 48 cm. Engraved by Th. Cook. London, 1809 (?). Framed with a passe-partout and glass. – All prints are unframed; shipped without frames.
