Inner joints strengthened, only slightly rubbed). First edition of the final version. - Borst 2539. - Zippermann 11. - “Alongside Goethe’s *Wilhelm Meister* and Stifter’s *Nachsommer*, this work is generally regarded as the most significant German-language Bildungsroman of the 19th century” (KLL 9, 273). - Title page of Vol. I bearing a handwritten owner’s inscription from 1887; endpaper with a pasted-in portrait.
