Klauber, Johann Baptist and Joseph Sebastian A pictorial illustration of the Litany of Our Lady of Loreto. With 57 mounted copper plates (including frontispiece) depicting the Virgin Mary by the Klauber brothers. Text in Dutch. Brussels, Boucherie, (1760). Unpaginated. Contemporary leather binding with spine and cover repairs (stained) and three-sided gilt edges. A rare, devotional Catholic work from the late 18th century. The Litany of Loreto is one of the most important and time-honoured Catholic prayers of supplication in honour of the Virgin Mary. For the cycle of the Litany of Loreto, the Klauber brothers designed a world-famous series of 56 numbered copperplate engravings. Each plate features Mary at its centre and sets the respective theological symbol (e.g. the Rosa Mystica or the Tower of Ivory) within an extremely opulent, dynamic architectural framework of Rococo cartouches, putti, clouds and biblical emblems. - Endpaper with handwritten note, partly stained and browned; plate 11 with a corner missing. Containing 57 mounted engraved plates (including frontispiece) devoted to the Mother of God, Mary, by the Klauber brothers. Text in Dutch. Brussels, Boucherie, (1760). Unpaginated.
