Sketchbook. With an engraved title page and 6 engraved plates by Kugler (4), Reinick (1) and Pluddemann (1), as well as 11 musical supplements comprising a total of 78 lithographed pages. Berlin, Reimer, 1830. Small 8°. IV, 168 pp., 1 fol. (Somewhat late.) Half leather with mounted illustrated original cover (somewhat rubbed and scuffed).
First edition. – Rümann 1174. – Mallon, Brentano 92 – This charming sketchbook demonstrates Kugler’s multifaceted artistic talent as a poet, painter and composer, much like his contemporaries Hoffmann, Lyser and Pocci. In addition to the illustrations—some of which are reminiscent of Grandville—it contains Kugler’s compositions set to poems by his friends W. Müller, Uhland, Brentano, Heine, Chamisso (‘Frauenliebe und Leben’ in its first edition) and others. – On the endpaper, a handwritten "To his dear master Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff – Franz Kugler. Berlin, 31 August 1831." – Some foxing. – Also included: Bürger, G.A. *The Adventures of the Famous Baron von Munchhausen*. Part 1: Landreisen (all previously published material).
