Malherbe, François de Poésies de Malherbe. Paris, Didot, 1797. 4°. 27, 325 pp. (Modern) hand-bound in full leather on 5 bands with gold-stamped title and blind-stamped decoration (slightly faded at the edges). Collection of French and Latin Classical Authors. – Brunet III, 1338 – The work is regarded as a masterpiece of late 18th-century French book art. This book is the thirteenth and final volume of the famous ‘Collection des auteurs classiques françois et latins’, originally commissioned by King Louis XVI for the education of the Crown Prince (Dauphin). Printed in the Antiqua typefaces designed by Firmin Didot, which were revolutionary for their time and are characterised by an extreme contrast between thick and hair-fine lines, without any Baroque ornamentation or illustrations. - Generously laid out, with wide margins, printed on untrimmed, heavy handmade paper. - Endpapers slightly foxed; overall a good copy.
