Songs by Arno. Salzburg, Anton Pustet, 1881. 95 pp., 2 leaves. Small 8°. Gold- and blind-embossed contemporary cloth binding with gold-embossed title and gold-embossed title on the cover ‘Herzens-Klänge’ – and and three-sided gold edging (worn, browned, front hinge loose).
Probably the only copy in existence, not found either on the market or in libraries. - Behind the pseudonym ‘Arno’ lies a member of the Habsburg high nobility: Maria Antoinette, Archduchess of Tuscany (1858–1883). - See the entry in the BLKÖ (vol. 46, from p. 211): “The Archduchess is also credited with the authorship of a small volume of poems entitled ‘Lieder von Arno’ … of which only a very small number of copies, printed as a manuscript, were distributed amongst a select few. This little volume contains 62 songs (poems) full of tenderness and melancholy (...)”. - Franz Brümmer’s Encyclopaedia of 19th-Century German Poets, under the entry for Maria Antoinette: “In 1880, the Archduchess was appointed by the Emperor of Austria as Abbess of the Hradčany Convent for Noblewomen in Prague. She lived mostly in Salzburg and died on 13 April 1883 in Cannes, in the south of France.” – Book block torn at the spine; front endpaper loose; slightly browned due to the paper; foxing throughout.
