Description
Ovid Naso, Publius
Pub. Ovidii Nasonis *Metamorphoses*. Illustrated with engravings on copper. With 146 (of 150) copper plates, most of which were additionally etched by M. Küsel after J. W. Baur, all bearing Latin captions and numbered on the plate. Augsburg, Kysell, 1681. 3 leaves (2 blank, title), 146 leaves, 2 blank leaves. Landscape format (200 x 165 mm). Bound in contemporary smoothed calfskin on four raised bands; the covers, framed with fillets carved with a scraper, are rolled into a decorative frame featuring gold-stamped decorative frames depicting foliage and flowers, and stamped with floral corner pieces, as well as gilding on the fore-edge and inner edges; the spine bears a gold-embossed title in the second compartment; the other four compartments feature rich floral gilding, together with endpapers of combed marbled paper and gold edging on the reverse (the joints show old, barely visible restoration and are scuffed; the corners are slightly bumped).
A lovely Baroque series of etchings based on Ovid’s masterpiece. - VD17 23:268728C. - Graesse V, 96 and Brunet, IV, 1, 288. - AKL VII, 629 (for Baur). - A variant edition of the first Küsel edition, featuring a simplified, purely typographical title page instead of the engraved, calligraphic one bearing the German title ‘Wunderliche Verenderung Verschidener Gestalden’. - Plates 137–140 are missing. - Plate 26 bears a professionally applied backing. The verso of the front endpaper and the first blank page contain a few small notes; some pages bear additional numbering in pencil. Some ink, fingerprint and dirt stains in places on the white margins; slightly browned throughout; overall a presentable, wide-margined copy in a gold-embossed binding.
