Description
Particulars of Shakespeare’s House, at Stratford-upon-Avon, for Sale by Auction, by Mr Robins. Sales prospectus (auction catalogue) for the auction of Shakespeare’s birthplace. London, Robins, 1847. Paperback cover with 8 lithographic title vignettes (creased, stained and browned).
A rare prospectus for the sale of Shakespeare’s birthplace on Henley Street. – The sale was organised by the London auctioneer Robins. The auction took place on 16 September 1847 at the Auction Mart in London. The house is extolled as ‘the truly heart-stirring relic of a most glorious period’. The publication also contains ‘The baptisms, marriages and burials of the Shakspere family’ based on the Stratford parish registers, as well as extracts from several authors on Stratford. As “Lot 1”, the house was sold for 3,000 pounds to the chairmen of the London and Stratford committees. The sale became necessary when the house was put up for sale in 1846 following the death of the widow of the previous owner, Court. Rumours circulated that the American showman P. T. Barnum intended to buy it and ship it to the USA. Consequently, a committee was formed, of which Charles Dickens was a member. It raised the 3,000 pounds and purchased the house. The committee later evolved into the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. The bids initially stood at 1,500, 2,000 and 2,100 pounds. Then a letter offering 3,000 pounds was handed to the auctioneer. - Without the inner pages, just the cover. In good overall condition.
