First edition, rare. - ADB 35. 516–519 - Ziegenfuss p. 627 - In this book, Stäudlin published for the very first time important letters, hitherto completely unknown, which Immanuel Kant had addressed to him during his lifetime. Among the printed letters, one in particular stands out: a letter from Kant to Stäudlin dated 4 May 1793. This letter is one of the most frequently cited documents in Kant scholarship, as in it Kant summarises his entire philosophical life’s work in a historically incisive manner: “My plan, formulated some time ago, for tackling the field of pure philosophy as my task, centred on three questions: 1) What can I know? (Metaphysics) 2) What ought I to do? (Ethics) 3) What may I hope for? (Religion), which was inevitably followed by a fourth: What is man? (Anthropology ...)” This lot is subject to standard tax.
