Description
Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich Thus Spoke Zarathustra. A Book for All and None. In three parts. Leipzig, Fritzsch, (1886). 114, 103, 119 pp. Contemporary half leather with gilt title (slightly scuffed; spine re-mounted with a small missing section; joints open). First complete edition of volumes 1–3. – Schaberg 45. - Borst 3580. - Krummel 61. - The three parts of *Zarathustra* were initially published separately by Ernst Schmeitzner in Chemnitz: Parts 1 and 2 in 1883, Part 3 in 1884. When Schmeitzner’s publishing house went into liquidation in 1886, E. W. Fritzsch took over the unsold stock. He republished the existing sheets with a new main title. Here, too, the printed sheets from the first editions of 1883 and 1884 were used. Of the 1,000 copies printed in each run, more than 900 went to Fritzsch, who added new main and subheadings. The text therefore corresponds to that of the first editions. Only the title page is new. The first part of the work is regarded as Nietzsche’s principal poetic-philosophical work. It contains, for the first time, the doctrine of the ‘Übermensch’ and the ‘Will to Power’. The fourth part was published in 1885 as a private printing only and is therefore missing from this three-part edition. The first complete edition of all four parts was not published until 1892. This 1886 compilation is therefore the first edition to present Parts 1–3 together as a single work. - The contemporary half-leather binding is slightly scuffed at the edges. The spine has been remounted and has a small missing section. The joints are open. Inside, there is an ex-libris on the inside cover and a small stamp on the title page. Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt title on the spine (slightly scuffed, spine remounted with a small missing section, joints open). - First collected edition of volumes 1–3. - Schaberg 45. - Borst 3580. - Krummel 61. - The three parts of *Zarathustra* first appeared separately through Ernst Schmeitzner in Chemnitz: parts 1 and 2 in 1883, part 3 in 1884. When Schmeitzner’s publishing house went bankrupt in 1886, E. W. Fritzsch took over the unsold stock. He reissued the existing sheets with a new main title. The printed sheets from the 1883 and 1884 first editions were therefore used here as well. Of the 1,000 copies printed of each part, more than 900 went to Fritzsch, who provided them with new general and section titles. The text thus corresponds to that of the first printings; only the title pages are new. The first part of the work is regarded as Nietzsche’s principal poetic-philosophical work. It contains, for the first time, the doctrine of the ‘Übermensch’ (Overman) and the ‘will to power’. The fourth part appeared in 1885 only as a private printing and is therefore absent from this three-part edition. The first complete edition of all four parts did not appear until 1892. The present 1886 compilation is therefore the first edition to present parts 1–3 together as a single work. - The contemporary half-leather binding is somewhat rubbed at the edges. The spine has been remounted and has a small loss. The joints are open. Inside are a bookplate on the front endpaper and a small stamp on the title page.
