Nietzscheana – Dite Collection
Nietzsche, Friedrich
Contributions to the Study of Sources and Criticism of Diogenes Laertius. A commemorative publication by the Paedagogium in Basel. Basel, C. Schultze’s University Printing House, 1870. 4°. 2 leaves, 36.7 pp. Contemporary half-leather binding (blue original cover bound in) (slightly scuffed, original cover slightly stained).
First edition of this rare private printing (according to Schaberg, at least 100 copies were printed). – Schaberg 18 and p. 35 – Krummel I, 7, M. – “A few months after the publication of *Homer* (Nietzsche’s first independent publication), Nietzsche’s colleague Franz Dorotheus Gerlach, who … had worked as a Latin teacher for fifty years, was publicly honoured.” Nietzsche, who was required to teach Latin for a few hours a week at the Pedagogium there, prepared the commemorative volume with his text, even though Gerlach – as a bitter opponent of Nietzsche’s mentor Ritschl – had rejected Nietzsche’s appointment to Basel. - Nietzsche’s text is followed by eight pages of “reports … on the lessons taught during the 1869 and 1870 academic years”, in which Nietzsche’s appointment from Leipzig to Basel in 1869 is also mentioned. He succeeded Adolf Kiesling as a lecturer in Greek, who had been appointed to the Johanneum in Hamburg. - Some foxing; the last leaf has a repaired corner tear.
