Description
Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich The Case of Wagner. A Musician’s Problem. Second edition. Leipzig, Naumann, 1888. 4 leaves (title page, preface, subheadings), 57 (1, printer’s proof) S. Gr.-8°. Contemporary red linen binding with typographic spine title in gold lettering (slightly stained, corners slightly bumped.) First edition of Nietzsche’s critique of Wagner as the composer of the ‘Germanic’ militarisation of the marching step, with a revised title page. – Schaberg 54 and p. 213ff. (with illustration on p. 215). - Schaberg, *All Things Nietzsche*, Cat. 16, p. 34. - Borst 3766. - Krummel XVII. - Jacoby p. 57. - Zimmermann 42. - Wilpert/Gühring 23. - Since the 1860s, Nietzsche had been engaged with Wagner’s music and persona, initially as an admirer and friend, and ultimately as a critic, indeed an enemy of the composer, whom Nietzsche now portrayed as the ‘Germanic’ commander of an obedient audience ‘with long legs’. This dispute was to culminate, a few months after the publication of this work, in the pamphlet *Nietzsche contra Wagner*. - One of only 500 copies with an altered title page, on which the year of publication has been removed and the misleading addition ‘Second edition’ has been made. – Naumann printed a total of 1,000 copies at the same time, 500 of each with the different title pages. The actual second edition was not to appear until 1891. - Title page bearing a barely visible handwritten annotation in pencil; some pages have been discreetly reinforced at the fold; isolated instances of minimal fingermarking. Overall, an exceptionally clean copy of outstanding collectable quality. First edition, first issue with an altered title page of Nietzsche’s critique of Wagner as the composer of the ‘Germanic’ militarised mentality. Contemporary red cloth with a gilt typographic title on the spine (slightly soiled, with minimal scuffing to the corners.) – For references, see above. - Since the 1860s, Nietzsche had been engaged with Wagner’s music and persona, initially as an admirer and friend, and ultimately as a critic – indeed, an enemy – of the composer, whom Nietzsche portrayed in this essay as the ‘Germanic’ commander of an obedient audience ‘with long legs’.
