Description
Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music. Second edition. With the publisher’s logo (‘Prometheus Unbound’) as a title vignette in woodcut. Leipzig, Fritzsch, 1874 (with a label pasted over it: Chemnitz, Schmeitzner, 1878). (III) IV, 144 pp. 8°. Bradel-style half-linen binding from the second third of the 20th century with a typographic spine title on a paper label; the covers and spine covered with blind-embossed crinkled paper (slightly sun-faded at the edges and very slightly stained). Very rare second edition of Nietzsche’s first published book. – Schaberg 30 and p. 62ff. – Schaberg, *All Things Nietzsche*, Cat. 16, p. 20. – Krummel I, p. 75. - Wilpert/Gühring 3. - One of only 174 copies of Schmeitzner’s title edition of the second edition—corrected by Nietzsche himself—of his powerful plea for the necessity of art in life. Schmeitzner had taken over the entire 1874 edition—originally printed by Naumann for Fritzsch in a run of 750 copies—from the insolvent Fritzsch and distributed it in 1878 with amended publisher’s details on the title page. After he himself had to file for bankruptcy in 1886, Fritzsch—which had since resumed business—bought back a remaining print run of 576 copies. - pp. 80–84 with foxing in places and more severe mould stains; title page slightly soiled; scattered mould stains, particularly on the first and last pages, mostly along the margins, and some browning; some leaves reinforced at the fold during the later binding. Overall, a clean copy of this extremely rare volume. Very rare reissue of the second edition of Nietzsche’s first published book. Bound in a Bradel-style half-cloth binding from the second third of the 20th century, with a typographic title on the spine printed on a paper label; the boards and spine are covered with blind-stamped crinkled paper (slightly faded at the edges and with very slight staining). - For references, see above. - One of only 174 copies of Schmeitzner’s reissue of the second edition of *The Birth of Tragedy...* with corrections by Nietzsche. Schmeitzner had taken over the entire 1874 edition, originally printed by Naumann for Fritzsch in a print run of 750 copies, and distributed it in 1878 with amended publisher’s details on the title page. After Schmeitzner himself was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1886, Fritzsch – which had since resumed business – bought back the remaining print run of 576 copies. - Pages 80–84 show more pronounced foxing and signs of shelf wear in places; the title page is slightly soiled; the first and last pages in particular have minor foxing and are slightly stained by age, mostly along the margins; some leaves have been reinforced at the fold during subsequent binding.
