XVIII, IV, 144 pp. Hardback with gold-stamped title on spine (spine faded and slightly scuffed). Schaberg 42. - Fourth edition of Nietzsche’s first philosophical work, first published in 1872 under the title *The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music* and reappeared in 1886 with the revised title, expanded to include the *Attempt at Self-Criticism*. - Cf. Schaberg 20, 30 and 41 (with a small wavy line beneath the author’s name for the 2nd ed., which is missing here). - Stamp of a private library on the endpaper, with his handwritten signature on the title page and a faint impression of the stamp.
