Description
Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich Poems and Aphorisms. Leipzig, Naumann, 1898. XXII, 203 pp., 6 leaves (publisher’s advertisements). Small 8°. Original paperback with gold-embossed title on spine and front cover and three-sided gold edging (slightly stained). First complete edition of Nietzsche’s poems and aphorisms. It contains the first complete printing of the nine Dionysian Dithyrambs. Edited by Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, who provided the volume with an introduction and an afterword. The Dionysian Dithyrambs were written in 1888 and are Nietzsche’s last work intended for publication. They were not published during the poet’s lifetime. The first edition was published in 1891 by Naumann as an appendix to the fourth part of *Thus Spoke Zarathustra*, edited by Peter Gast. The cycle comprises nine poems in free verse. Three of these are based on texts from *Thus Spoke Zarathustra*, which Nietzsche revised for this collection. In this 1898 edition, they appear in full for the first time. The volume thus brings together Nietzsche’s poetic work, which, whilst playing a secondary role alongside his philosophical oeuvre, is closely linked to the *Thus Spoke Zarathustra* complex. The publisher’s advertisements at the end (6 leaves) are present in full. The cover features the parchment binding typical of the period, produced by Naumann Verlag, with gilt edges.
