Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich The Twilight of the Idols, or How to Philosophise with a Hammer. Leipzig, C. G. Naumann, 1889 (title 1889, printed 1888). 4 leaves, 144 pp. Modern cardboard binding with original cover mounted. First edition of one of Nietzsche’s most controversial works, printed in a run of 1,000 copies. - Schaberg 56. - Borst Collection 3811. - In this slim volume, Nietzsche summarised central ideas from his later work. The work was completed in October 1888. It was originally intended to be titled ‘A Psychologist’s Idleness’. On the advice of Peter Gast, who found the title too unambitious, Nietzsche chose the parodic allusion to Wagner’s ‘Götterdämmerung’. He himself called it ‘a great declaration of war’. - Title page and the first 6 pages are dusty and slightly foxed.
