VI pp., 1 leaf (table of contents), 182 pp., 1 leaf (table of contents, colophon). Large 8°. Contemporary half-leather binding with gold-stamped typographic title on the spine, covers overlaid with marbled paper, endpapers of patterned paper and a red head cut (spine more heavily scuffed at the ends, joints at the head split open, corners and edges bumped and scuffed). First edition of Nietzsche’s most accessible work, and therefore the one of greatest significance in terms of its impact. – Schaberg 40 and pp. 163ff. Herm. Mutschmann stud. phil.” in ink on the title page and numerous hand-drawn highlights, notes and corrections in pencil. - A few pages show slight finger-stains and dirt marks in the white margins; evenly browned due to the nature of the paper; otherwise a well-preserved copy, uncut on two edges. First edition of Nietzsche’s most accessible work, and therefore the one with the greatest impact. Bound in contemporary half-leather with a gilt typographic spine title; boards covered with ploved marbled paper and endpapers of block-printed paper (spine, head, corners and edges slightly rubbed). – For references, see above. – “By any standard, ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ is among the greatest books in Western culture."
