Nietzsche, Friedrich
Human, All Too Human. A Book for Free Spirits. Appendix: Miscellaneous Thoughts and Sayings. And: The Wanderer and His Shadow. Chemnitz et al., Schmeitzner et al., 1879 and 1880. 163 (1, printer’s miscellany) pp., 5 folios (supplement) and 185 (1, errata) pp., XVIII pp. (preface) Large 8°. Contemporary half-linen binding with gold-embossed title on spine, covers covered in Kiebitz paper and speckled edges on the reverse (spine slightly bleached, corners and edges slightly bumped and rubbed).
First editions of the second and third (and final) parts of Nietzsche’s first collection of aphorisms. – Schaberg 31 and 32a. – Schaberg, *All Things Nietzsche*, Cat. 16, pp. 22ff. - Borst Collection 3395. - WNB 300. - Wilpert/Gühring 8 and 9. - Appendix and supplementary volume to *Human, All Too Human*, the corpus of early aphorisms and maxims, comprising 408 and 185 numbered passages respectively, containing reflections on socio-cultural and psychological phenomena in connection with the organic and physiological disposition of the individual, against the backdrop of the pursuit of power and the subjectivity of truths. The first part was published in 1878 to mark the 100th anniversary of Voltaire’s death. - With the publisher’s handwritten correction in pencil on page 35 of the ‘Miscellaneous Sayings’ (‘Opfer“thiers”’ instead of ‘Opfer“sinns”’). - 1,000 copies of the first edition were printed by R. Oschatz in Chemnitz on behalf of Schmeitzner. After several years, 674 and 808 respectively remained, and these were taken over – following the publisher’s insolvency in 1886 – first by Nietzsche’s first publisher, Fritzsch, and later by the printer-publisher Naumann; consequently, only 326 and 192 copies with the original, unaltered title pages by Schmeitzer, as seen here, entered circulation. - Provenance: Dr Fritz Bischoff, 1856–97, classical philologist, historian and Fridericologist, bearing his handwritten signature on the flyleaf (recto), dated ‘1879 & 1880’. – An exceptionally clean copy, showing hardly any browning.
First edition, first printing of Nietzsche’s second and third collections of early aphorisms. Neatly bound in contemporary half-cloth with gilt title on the spine; the boards are covered with plover-marbled paper and the edges are speckled (spine somewhat bleached, slightly bumped and scuffed at the corners and edges). - For references, see above. - The appendix and supplement sections of Nietzsche’s early aphorisms, titled *Menschliches, Allzumenschliches*, comprising 408 and 185 respectively numbered texts containing reflections on socio-cultural and psychological phenomena in connection with the organic and physiological disposition of the individual, against the backdrop of the will to power and the subjectivity of truths. The first part was published in 1878 to mark the 100th anniversary of Voltaire’s death. - With the publisher’s handwritten correction in pencil on page 35 of “Vermischte Sprüche” (‘thiers’ instead of ‘sinns’). - 1,000 copies were printed by R. Oschatz in Chemnitz on behalf of Schmeitzner. Several years later, 674 and 808 copies respectively remained unsold and were taken over, following the publisher’s insolvency in 1886, first by Nietzsche’s first publisher Fritzsch and later by the printer-publisher Naumann. Consequently, only 326 and 192 copies respectively, with Schmeitzner’s original, unaltered title pages such as this one, entered circulation. - Provenance: Dr Fritz Bischoff, 1856–97, classical philologist, historian and specialist in Frederick the Great, with his handwritten owner’s note on the recto of the flyleaf, dated ‘1878 & 1880’. - A particularly clean copy, with almost no age-stains on the paper.
