Nietzscheana – Dite Collection
Nietzsche, Friedrich
Human, All Too Human. A Book for Free Spirits. Chemnitz et al., Schmeitzner et al., 1878. 4 leaves (frontispiece, title page, preface, table of contents), 377 (1, printer’s errata) pp., 2 leaves (list) large 8°. Contemporary half-linen binding with gold-stamped spine title, covers lined with Kiebitz paper and speckled edges on the reverse (minimally bumped and scuffed at the corners, edges and joints).
First edition of Nietzsche’s first collection of aphorisms. – Schaberg 29. – Schaberg, *All Things Nietzsche*, Cat. 16, p. 21. – Borst 3395. - Jacoby p. 52. - Zimmermann 25. - Wilpert/Gühring 7. - First part of Nietzsche’s trilogy containing early aphorisms and maxims, comprising 638 numbered passages containing reflections on socio-cultural and psychological phenomena in connection with the organic and physiological disposition of the individual, against a backdrop of the pursuit of power and the subjectivity of truths. Two further parts were to follow in 1879 (‘Miscellaneous Opinions and Sayings’) and 1880 (‘The Wanderer and His Shadow’). - p. 290, featuring the correction mentioned by Schaberg, made by means of a strip of paper stuck on (5th line, ‘eere’). - 1,000 copies of the first edition were printed by R. Oschatz in Chemnitz for Schmeitzner and offered by him in paperback or hardback (see the publisher’s advertisement in “Miscellaneous Opinions…”, 1879). Several years later, 551 copies remained, and following the publisher’s insolvency in 1886, these were taken over by Nietzsche’s first publisher, Fritzsch, and later by the printer-publisher Naumann, which is why only 449 copies with Schmeitzer’s original, unaltered title pages, as seen here, entered circulation. - Provenance: Dr Fritz Bischoff, 1856–97, classical philologist, historian and specialist in Frederick the Great, with his handwritten signature on the recto of the flyleaf, dated 1878. - Title page with isolated small and barely noticeable foxing spots; slightly browned throughout due to the nature of the paper; otherwise a very well-preserved copy.

Two further parts were to follow in 1879 (‘Vermischte Meinungen und Sprüche’) and 1880 (‘Der Wanderer und sein Schatten’). - Page 290 features the correction also mentioned by Schaberg, made by means of a strip of paper pasted onto the page in the fifth line, bearing the printed letters ‘eere’. - 1,000 copies were printed by R. Oschatz in Chemnitz on behalf of Schmeitzner, who offered them either in wrappers or bound (see the publisher’s advertisement in “Vermischte Meinungen…”, 1879). Several years later, 551 of these remained unsold and were taken over, following the publisher’s insolvency in 1886, first by Nietzsche’s first publisher Fritzsch and later by the printer-publisher Naumann. Consequently, only 449 copies with Schmeitzner’s original, unaltered title pages, such as the present one, entered circulation.
