Nietzscheana – Dite Collection
Nietzsche, Friedrich
Morgenröthe. Thoughts on Moral Prejudices. Chemnitz et al., Schmeitzner et al., 1881. 363 (1) pp. 8°. Contemporary half-leather binding with gold-embossed typographic and ornamental title on the spine, covers lined with Kiebitz paper and speckled edges on the reverse (spine at the joints and headbands expertly restored).
First edition of Nietzsche’s radical dismantling of Christian morality for the benefit of self-determined minds. – Schaberg 33 and p. 110. - Borst 3501. - Jacoby, p. 53. - Zimmermann 28. - Wilpert/Gühring 10. - One of only 216 copies with the original, unaltered title page by Schmeitzer. - The body of text comprising 575 numbered aphorisms was partly written in Italy, primarily in Genoa, where Nietzsche stayed in 1880–81 whilst searching for an affordable place to live and recuperating. Originally, 1,000 copies were printed by Teubner in Leipzig for Schmeitzner. Several years later, 784 of these remained and, following the publisher’s insolvency in 1886, were taken over by Nietzsche’s first publisher, Fritzsch, who reissued the remaining copies with a revised title page. - Joints at the fold of the endpapers reinforced; title page and final leaves slightly foxed; very slightly browned throughout due to the paper; the text pages contain a few notes in pencil; the front flyleaf has a small ink stain. Overall, a very well-preserved copy of the rare first edition of this significant book.

Originally, 1,000 copies were printed by Teubner in Leipzig for Schmeitzer. In 1886, a total of 784 copies remained unsold and were taken over by Nietzsche’s first publisher, Fritzsch, following Schmeitzner’s insolvency. Fritzsch presumably reissued the remaining stock with an altered title page. - The joints are reinforced at the folds of the endpapers; the first and last leaves show some foxing; the paper has very slight age-stains throughout; the margins contain a few notes in pencil; and the front flyleaf has a small ink stain.
