Description
Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich Nietzsche contra Wagner. Case notes of a psychologist. Leipzig: Naumann, 1889. 2 leaves (title page, preface), 41 (1) pp. Large 8°. Original paperback with black cover title (front cover repaired at the hinge and along the top and bottom margins on the fold side; throughout, browned due to the nature of the paper.) Extremely rare first edition of Nietzsche’s definitive pamphlet against Wagner. - Schaberg 57 and pp. 229ff. (with illustration on p. 233). - Krummel I, AD. - WNB 320. - Wilpert/Gühring 25. - Not in the Borst collection. - Nietzsche wrote this work, an adapted compilation of his remarks on Wagner dating from the 1870s, in December 1888. It was to be the last work whose proofs he corrected entirely by himself. Around the turn of the year 1888/89, he succumbed to mental derangement in Turin. - One of only 100 copies of a private publication, printed on behalf of Nietzsche’s inner circle, which – due to its controversial content – had not initially been intended for publication at all; it did not go on sale but was distributed to Nietzsche’s friend Overbeck and his secretary Gast. Eighty copies ended up in the Nietzsche Archive and were later often given away by its director, Nietzsche’s sister Elisabeth Förster, often with a personal dedication. The first publicly available edition of the pamphlet was not to appear until five years later. - Title page with a four-line dedication in ink, dated 1938. - Minimal foxing in a few margins; browned throughout due to the nature of the paper. Overall, a well-preserved, partly uncut copy of this extremely rare item, scarcely to be found in the fragile original paperback binding, which is, as here, in good condition. In the original publisher’s wrappers with a black cover title (front cover skilfully restored at the spine and on the top and bottom margins along the fold; throughout, naturally yellowed due to the paper.) - Nietzsche compiled this text, an adapted version of his remarks on Wagner dating from the 1870s, in December 1888.
