Nietzscheana – Dite Collection
Nietzsche, Friedrich
Rheinisches Museum für Philologie. Index volume for Volumes 1–24 of the new series (1842–1869). Frankfurt, Sauerländer, 1871 (published at the end of January 1872). 175 pp. Contemporary half-leather binding with red title label.
Rare first edition. – Cf. Schaberg 21 and pp. 49–50. - The index volume was probably published shortly after *The Birth of Tragedy* (cf. Schaberg, p. 50 and note 60). Nietzsche compiled it with the help of his sister Elisabeth, and the work was lengthy and laborious. According to Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, he spent one and a half years compiling the index for a philological journal. He did this only because he had promised his teacher Friedrich Ritschl that he would find someone to carry out this work. As he could find no one else, he undertook it himself. - Slightly tanned. An old, invalid school stamp on the reverse of the title page. - Slightly tanned, old school stamp (invalid) on the reverse of the title page.
