Edited by Friedrich Zarncke. 3 volumes. Leipzig, Avenarius, 1868–1870. 4°. Contemporary paper binding with paper spine label (1868) and contemporary cardboard binding with paper spine label (1869–70). - Spine labels slightly scuffed). Rare first editions of all 8 of Nietzsche’s reviews in the *Literarisches Centralblatt*. – pp. 1–8 and pp. 25–26. - Includes a review of Georg Friedrich Schömann’s *Die Hesiodische Theogonie* and Valentinus Rose’s edition of *Anacreontis Teii quae vocantur Symposiaka* (in 1868), as well as further critical announcements and reviews of new publications in classical antiquity studies, including works on Diogenes Laertius, Democritus and ancient literary history (1869–70). - The 7th commentary is (according to Schaberg) particularly interesting because it reports on the doctoral thesis of Nietzsche’s friend Erwin Rohde, which was published by the Leipzig publisher Wilhelm Engelmann. Engelmann was the first publisher to whom Nietzsche offered *The Birth of Tragedy* for publication. When the book was finally published in 1872, Rohde reciprocated Nietzsche’s review by providing the only academic defence of the work (Schaberg, p. 26). - 1868 edition with a crossed-out library stamp on the reverse of the title page; inside cover bearing a stamp (‘Doublette Weimar’); 1869–70 editions with a school library stamp on the title pages and a corresponding bookplate on the inside covers.
