New Series, Vol. 22–23 and 25 in 3 volumes. Frankfurt, Sauerländer, 1867–1870. Contemporary half-leather bindings (2 x dark brown and 1 x black, slightly rubbed) with gold-stamped spines. Collection comprising 5 first editions by Nietzsche. - Schaberg 9–14 – Contains: On the History of the Theognidean Collection of Sayings – Contributions to the Criticism of the Greek Lyric Poets. I. The Lament of Danae. – On the Sources of Diogenes Laertius. Parts I & II. – Analecta Laertiana. - The Florentine Treatise on Homer and Hesiod, Their Lineage and Their Rivalry (Part One). An investigation of an ancient manuscript concerning the legendary poetic contest between Homer and Hesiod. (The second part was not published until 1873). - These publications brought him to the attention of the academic world even before he had obtained his doctorate. In terms of content, they focused primarily on ancient Greek poetry, source criticism and the historian of philosophy Diogenes Laertius. The quality of these works at the Rheinisches Museum led directly to his appointment as Professor of Classical Philology in Basel at the age of just 24. – Somewhat foxed in places; old school stamp on title pages. Collection of 5 first editions by Nietzsche. – Schaberg 9–14 - These publications brought him recognition amongst scholars even before he had earned his doctorate. The content focused primarily on ancient Greek poetry, source criticism and the historian of philosophy Diogenes Laertius.
