Rischl. Frankfurt, Sauerländer, 1842–1898. Vol. 1/1842–53 (1898), excluding vols. 7/8, 33/34 and 40. Contemporary half-leather binding with paper endpapers. (Stamp on title page, front and back: ‘Gymnasium Trier, withdrawn from Trier City Library’). A rare, comprehensive set of 40 volumes of this journal, which is still in publication today and is one of the most significant and long-established in the field of classical philology. Includes all articles by Nietzsche originally published in the *Rheinisches Museum* (first edition, volumes 22–25 and 28) in their first printings. - Schaberg 9–14, 16 - Krummel I,3 - Kirchner 7180 - NDB XXI, 652 (Ritschl) - Contents: I: On the History of the Theognidean Collection of Sayings. - II: Contributions to the Criticism of the Greek Lyric Poets. - III/1–2: *De Laertii Diogenis fontibus* by Fridericus Nietzsche. - IV: *Analecta Laertiana* by Fridericus Nietzsche. - V/1–2: The Florentine Treatise on Homer and Hesiod, their Lineage and their Rivalry. - In addition to Nietzsche’s works, the volumes of the Rheinisches Museum contain numerous significant contributions by Nietzsche’s teachers and contemporaries, including O. Benndorf, F. Blass, G. Curtius, O. Jahn, A. Klette, A. Kiessling, C. Peter, O. Ribbeck, F. Ritschl, Erwin Rohde, C. Schaarschmidt, F. Susemihl, W. Vischer, C. Wachsmuth and others. – W. Ritschl, Nietzsche’s teacher at the time, wrote to his colleague Professor Kiessling in Basel in 1868: “You also enquire about Mr Nietzsche, to whom your attention has rightly been drawn by his excellent works in the Rhein. Museum … He is the first person whose contributions I ever included whilst still a student … He is the idol and (unwittingly) the leader of the entire young philological community here in Leipzig” (Krummel I, 3). - Somewhat lightly tanned in places; vol. 50 is scuffed and has water stains at the top of the pages; overall in good condition. A rare, comprehensive collection of 40 volumes of this journal, which is still in publication today and is one of the most important and long-established publications in the field of classical philology. Including all of Nietzsche’s articles first published in the Rheinisches Museum. - Half-leather-bound volumes with paper spine labels (discarded library copies with stamps on the front and back covers). - Some pages are slightly browned; vol. 50 is scuffed and has water stains on the edges at the beginning; overall, it is in good condition.
