Nietzsche, Friedrich
Untimely Meditations. Part Four. Richard Wagner in Bayreuth. Schloss-Chemnitz, Schmeitzner, 1876. 98 (2, printer’s notes) pp. Contemporary hardback with a cover of veined paste paper and a handwritten title on the spine on mounted paper labels (spine later reinforced with linen, endpapers replaced, scuffed and bumped).
First edition of the fourth and final part of Nietzsche’s ‘Reflections’, on his childhood idol Wagner. - Schaberg 27. - Schaberg, *All Things Nietzsche*, Cat. 16, pp. 10–16. - Borst Collection 3194. - Jacobi, p. 51. - Volpi, pp. 758ff. - WNB 367. - Wilpert-Gühring 6. - Zimmermann 24. - The final work in a publication project originally planned by Nietzsche to comprise 13 texts on the social, philosophical, religious and economic issues of the time, containing a tribute to Wagner, but also an early rejection of the emerging Wagner cult on the occasion of the Bayreuth Festival, which was inaugurated that same year. “It symbolised for Nietzsche ‘the extirpation of the German spirit in favour of the German Reich’.” (Schaberg, p. 16) - 1,500 copies of the first edition were printed by C. G. Naumann in Leipzig for Schmeitzner, 800 of which featured a title page amended to include the addition ‘Second Edition’, intended to boost sales. Of the set of sheets presented here, bearing the original title page, only 700 copies thus left the printing works. - The title page, originally cleanly separated at the fold, has been expertly reattached; the book shows the slight browning typical of the paper throughout, with occasional small ink spots, and is in good overall condition.
First edition, first printing of the fourth and final part of Nietzsche’s *Betrachtungen* on his early idol Wagner. Bound in a contemporary cardboard cover overlaid with veined paste paper, with a handwritten title on a mounted paper label on the spine (worn and slightly bumped). - For references, see above. - The final work in a publication project originally planned by Nietzsche to comprise 13 texts on the social, philosophical, religious and economic issues of the time. It includes a tribute to Wagner, but also expresses a rejection of the emerging Wagner cult following the inauguration of the Bayreuth Festival that same year. “For Nietzsche, it symbolised ‘the extirpation of the German spirit in favour of the German Reich’.” (Schaberg, p. 16) – 1,500 copies of the first edition were printed for Schmeitzner by C. G. Naumann in Leipzig, 800 of which had their title pages amended for marketing reasons to include the addition ‘Second edition’. Consequently, only 700 copies with the original title page, such as this one, left the printer. – The title page has been neatly detached from the binding but has since been skilfully repaired. Apart from the slightly yellowed pages, which are typical of this edition, the book is otherwise very well preserved indeed.
