Description
Nietzscheana – Dite Collection Nietzsche, Friedrich Untimely Meditations. Part Two. On the Use and Abuse of History for Life. Leipzig, Fritzsch, 1874. pp. (III)–VI, 7–111 (1). A slightly later half-linen binding with the original green cover mounted on light cardboard, featuring a typographic title on the cover and publisher’s advertisements on the reverse (linen spine slightly bleached, with minimal wear to the cover at the corners and edges, and minimal foxing and staining). First edition of the second part of Nietzsche’s *Betrachtungen*. – Schaberg 25a. - Schaberg, *All Things Nietzsche*, Cat. 16, pp. 10–16. - Borst Collection 3194. - Jacobi, p. 51. - Volpi, pp. 758ff. - WNB 352. - Wilpert-Gühring 4. - Zimmermann 22. - The second work in a publication project originally planned by Nietzsche to comprise 13 texts on contemporary social, philosophical, religious and economic issues, formulated as an attack on the positivist German historiography of his time. “In contrast, Nietzsche argued that historical knowledge is valuable only when it has a positive effect on human beings’ sense of life.” (Schaberg, p. 14) – 1,000 copies of the first edition were printed by C. G. Naumann in Leipzig on behalf of Fritzsch. Even after several years, only 222 had been sold. The remaining stock was bought back or repurchased by Fritzsch and Nietzsche’s second publisher, Schmeitzner, respectively, following various bankruptcies, and distributed as a ‘title edition’ (with the publisher’s details pasted over, the publisher’s stamp or a new title page), which is why only around a quarter of the print run entered circulation with the original, unaltered title page, as seen here. - Edges slightly dusty, corners slightly curled, a few leaves with foxing, throughout with the slight browning typical of the paper; some marginal notes in pencil; overall, a well-preserved copy in its largely intact original dust jacket. First edition, first printing of the second part of Nietzsche’s *Betrachtungen*. Bound in a slightly later half-cloth with the original green boards mounted on light cardboard, featuring a typographic title on the front and the publisher’s advertisements on the rear cover (spine slightly bleached, with minimal wear to the boards at the corners and edges, and minimal shelf wear along the edges and soiling). - For references, see above. - The second work in a publication project originally planned by Nietzsche to comprise 13 texts on the social, philosophical, religious and economic issues of the time, formulated as an attack on the positivist German historiography of his day. Even after several years, only 222 of these had been sold. The remainder was sold and/or repurchased by Fritzsch and Nietzsche’s second publisher, Schmeitzner, following their respective bankruptcies, and finally by Naumann, and distributed by them as reissued editions (with the publisher’s details covered by a new label, bearing the actual publisher’s stamp or featuring a new title page), which is why only a quarter of the print run entered circulation with Fritzsch’s original, unaltered title page, as is the case here. - Edges slightly dusty, corners slightly dog-eared, a few leaves with tiny foxing, with slight browning typical of this edition throughout, some marginal notes in pencil; overall in sound, collectable condition, with the majority of the original publisher’s wrappers present.
