Contemporary half-leather binding with gold-stamped typographic title on the spine, covers and endpapers lined with Kiebitz paper (spine at the head, corners and edges slightly rubbed).
First edition of Nietzsche’s work, which paved the way for 20th-century postmodern philosophy. – Schaberg 53 and pp. 204ff. (with ill. on p. 209). – Borst Collection 3729. - Jacoby, p. 57. - Wilpert/Gühring 22. - One of only 600 copies. - The text, structured into three essays comprising a total of 28 numbered sections, was announced by Nietzsche on the verso of the title page of *Beyond Good and Evil* (1886) as a ‘supplement and clarification’, (verso of title page) to *Beyond Good and Evil* (1886), as a supplement “intended to apply the principles described in the book to very specific cases.” (Schaberg, p. 204) - Provenance: Franz Josef and Laura Sofie Potthoff, a family of councillors and bibliophiles from Bad Kreuznach, with their heraldic ex-libris in chromolithography mounted on the front endpaper and a handwritten entry of the owner’s name in ink on the title page. - A few leaves in the fold have been discreetly reinforced, with occasional, barely visible finger stains. Overall, a very well-preserved, elegantly bound little volume of this influential work—which later proved significant for Foucault, amongst others—dissecting moral philosophy.
