Description
Art Deco Jongert, Jacob Hollandsche Draad- & Kabelfabriek, Amsterdam. Calendar comprising four lithographic sheets with gold embossing, based on drawings, on lightweight card. No place or date, 1921. 53 x 34.5 cm. Loose, single-sided printed sheets, each connected by two metal eyelets with a two-coloured cord. An impressive large-format calendar in the style of Dutch Modernism. – Designed and lithographed by Jacob Jongert (1883–1942), a pupil of Richard Roland-Holst. Among other things, Jongert worked as a graphic artist and designer for Oud and Leerdam, but in particular for the Van Nelle tobacco factory, where he served as creative director from 1923 to 1940. - The pages, which oscillate between Art Deco, the Amsterdam School and references to Symbolism and Expressionism, each cover a quarter of the year or a season, and are thematically defined by the depiction of a corresponding figure from Greek mythology (Helios, Orpheus, Atlas and Prometheus) and, in addition to their graphic mastery and functional composition, captivate with their harmonious typographic design. - Showing occasional slight creases and handling marks along the margins; the edges are slightly bumped in places; overall, a well-preserved calendar with high-contrast, velvety colour application and, in places, brilliant gold embossing. - Extremely rare on the market; we have only been able to trace a single copy at auction.
