Dark brown morocco with gold-stamped title on the spine, fillet binding, polychrome floral inlays on the covers, gilt edges, three-sided edges, polychrome floral endpapers, double endpapers of moiré silk and marbled paper (occasionally faintly scuffed). In a lined morocco slipcase. Signed: Max Fonsèque.
One of 10 numbered copies of the special edition on Japanese paper (GA 271). - Monod 10117. Fléty 72. - The watercolour depicts a title page featuring the pretty face of Hyalis, the little blue-eyed faun. Contains the etchings as well as one suite each in red chalk, black and ‘Decomposition’. The suite in black is not mentioned in the colophon. - The bookbinder Max Fonsèque (1891 – c. 1965) studied at the École Estienne before joining Lortic as a young craftsman. He moved to Monaco in 1920 and to Paris in 1925. This work represents one of Sylvain Sauvage’s finest illustrations from the Art Deco period. – Scattered with faint foxing. A highly decorative copy in a masterfully crafted binding.
