Description
Avalun Prints Grillparzer, Franz The Poor Minstrel. With 20 original etchings by Karl M. Schultheiß. 139 pp. Hellerau, Avalun, 1924. Original red leather binding with gilt spine and cover, gilt head edges and gilt inner edges. 38th Avalun edition. – Rodenberg 338,38. – Sennewald 24,1. – One of the first 120 numbered copies of the special edition in full leather, in which every full-page illustration is signed by the artist. A magnificent press edition of Grillparzer’s novella, first published in 1847, released as the 38th Avalun edition. The text was printed in Hellerau by Jakob Hegner in a typeface based on a Luther Fraktur cut around 1650. This meticulously designed edition combines the deliberately archaic, characterful typesetting with the expressive original etchings by Karl M. Schultheiß (1885–1961). He was one of the defining illustrators and book artists of the Avalun publishing house. His etchings bring to life Grillparzer’s melancholic tale of the impoverished, unworldly violinist Jakob in a visual language that powerfully captures the tension between artistic ambition, social marginalisation and the Biedermeier urban backdrop. This series ranks among the most appealing illustrated editions of the work. This lot is subject to standard tax.
