Avant-garde – Bulgaria
Dojtschew, Ljubomir
Glutnitsa hora. Poem. Cover and numerous illustrations within the text, including one full-page illustration, based on woodcuts by Christo Bagrow. Sofia, ‘Zadruzhen Trud’ Printing Works for the author, 1933. Small 8vo, (17), pp. 18–61, (3) pp. Original cloth binding with thread stitching and illustrated cover title (spine with minimal losses at the ends, two creases, discoloured).
First edition of this exceptionally multifaceted avant-garde poetry collection. – Not listed in Jacono; cf. ibid. 42 (on ‘Stozher’) and 62 (on Doychev). - A visually striking edition of these poems, and at the same time the first book publication by the renowned poet, prose writer and journalist Ljubomir Dojtchev (1909–91). Doychev spent his youth in Yambol, which in the 1920s was the centre of activity for the avant-garde group led by Kiril Krastev, inspired by Futurism, and the place of publication for the magazine *Crescendo*. In 1932, Dojtchev published the magazine *Stozher* in Sofia; alongside the periodicals *Novis* and *Ugari*, the most progressive periodical – oriented primarily towards Constructivism – of the second wave of Bulgarian modernism in the early 1930s. - The elaborate and impressive design of this small volume is by Christo Bagrov, who also provided illustrations for *Stozher*. It is particularly noteworthy that every single page features a different typographical layout, largely illustrated with woodcuts. Alongside geometric design elements typical of the Constructivist aesthetic, there are also Expressionist-style portraits of Cervantes, Dante, Jesus, Lermontov and Moses, as well as photographs of the author, the designer and the author’s late sister, to whom this book is dedicated, together with a lyrical ‘Requiem’. - Paper has yellowed, otherwise a well-preserved copy. - Extremely rare; we have only been able to trace it in the Bulgarian National Library, Sofia, and in the H. & H. R. collection. According to OCLC/WorldCat and KVK, I have been unable to locate any other copy worldwide.
