Description
Avant-garde – Romania
Pana, Sasa
Unu. Revista literara. Vol. II, No. 11, March 1929. Bucharest: Unu, 1929. Original cover with typographic title.
Special issue on Victor Brauner by the Romanian avant-garde. This issue of the artists’ magazine Unu is entirely dedicated to Victor Brauner. It ranks among the most sought-after issues of the Romanian avant-garde. Brauner’s visual language here lies between Dada and Constructivism and already points towards early Surrealism, which soon led him to Paris. The issue features a full-page reproduction of an ink drawing: a standing figure with a guitar, rendered in a Cubist-Constructivist style. Ilarie Voronca pays tribute to the artist in his eulogistic essay ‘Victor Brauner’. Benjamin Fondane (Fundoianu) contributes the French poem ‘L’aube d’un certain jour’, dedicated to Brauner and dated in Paris. Fondane lived in exile in Paris and was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. His work is now also of significance to collectors of Holocaust literature. Al. Marius is represented with the poem “Spic”. The title page also lists Geo Bogza, Filip Corsa, Malkine, Claude Sernet, Stefan Roll and the editor, Sasa Pana. About the journal. This ‘little magazine’ was published from 1928 to 1932 and was Romania’s last major avant-garde journal. It was initially published in Dorohoi, later in Bucharest; this issue is a Bucharest edition from 1929. Sasa Pana (1902–1981) edited it together with Moldov and financed it from his own funds. Contributors included Tristan Tzara and M. H. Maxy. Due to the small print run, complete, well-preserved issues are rare today.

I have added the diacritics to ‘Sasa Pana’ and ‘Revista literara’, and the word ‘illustrated’ to ‘wrappers’, as the cover is typographic and printed. Please delete ‘illustrated’ if you wish to adhere strictly to your original wording.
