Description
Avant-garde – Russia – Nivinsky, Ignaty Ignatyevich
Gozzi, Carlo
Princess Turandot. A tragic-theatrical Chinese fairy tale in five acts (Russian: Printsessa Turandot). Moscow and Petrograd, Gosizdat, 1923. With 12 colour lithographs, 14 zincographs, numerous vignettes and illustrations based on photographs by Ignatij Nivinsky. Large 4°. 33.2 × 24.8 cm. 222 pp., 1 leaf. Colour-illustrated original cardboard cover. (With minor damage to the cover).
Bowlt/Hernad 75 – Compton, p. 158 - Hellyer 134 - Rowell/Wye 493. - First edition of the magnificently produced documentation of Yevgeny Vakhtangov’s legendary production of Carlo Gozzi’s *Turandot*, which premiered on 28 February 1922 at the Third Studio Stage of the Moscow Art Theatre and is regarded as one of the key events in Russian avant-garde theatre. The publication brings together the text of the Venetian fairy-tale play with essays on the production, its artistic underpinnings and its contemporary reception, thereby capturing one of the style-defining theatre productions of the early 20th century in an exceptionally concise form. Particularly impressive is the visual design by Ignatiy Ignatyevich Nivinsky (1881–1933), the production’s set and costume designer: twelve colour lithographic plates reproduce his costume and set designs, whilst the zincographs and numerous photographic illustrations document the actors, set scenes and the theatrical realisation. Nivinsky also designed the cover and vignettes; the elaborately produced chromolithographs, mezzotints and zincographs were produced at Mospoligraf’s First Sample Printing Works. An important and rare document of Russian book and stage design of the 1920s, and at the same time a major work of illustrated theatre publishing from the early Soviet period. – Slightly browned due to the paper; a good copy overall.
