Avant-garde – Russia – Rodchenko, A. M.
Kirsanov, Semyon
Poslednij sovremennik. (The Last Contemporary). With a colour, Constructivist cover design by Alexander M. Rodchenko. Moscow, Federaciya, 1930. 96 pp. Small 8vo. (18.5 x 13 cm.) Original two-colour illustrated cardboard paperback in black and red.
The best-known work resulting from the collaboration between the Russian avant-garde poet S. Kirsanov and Alexander Rodchenko, the principal founder of Russian Constructivism. - Rowell/Wye 891 - The book was printed in 1930 by the Soviet state publishing house Federacija in Moscow in a small print run of just 3,000 copies. Immediately upon publication, the work came under fierce ideological criticism. Kirsanov was accused of an ‘ideological breakdown’. His fantastical, dystopian vision of the future was attacked as ‘petty-bourgeois’, and the work was never reprinted thereafter. - Small number on title page, slightly browned, a good copy overall. - Includes: Assejev, Nikolai, *Isbran Stichi 1912–1922* (Selected Poems from 1912–1922). With cover design by Alexander Rodchenko. Moscow, Krug, 1923. 128 pp., 2 leaves. Cardboard cover (slightly stained). - First edition. - Rowell/Wye 491 – This book marks Assejev’s transition from classical Russian Futurism (he was a close friend and comrade-in-arms of Vladimir Mayakovsky) to revolutionary Romanticism. The striking, radically abstract cover design is by Alexander Rodchenko and was created at the very height of his phase of purely typographic Constructivism. The most striking feature of the cover is the word ‘Izbran’, an idiosyncratic, futuristic neologism coined by Assejev to denote a selection or anthology of his works. Rodchenko placed this word in massive, bold, black block letters right at the centre of the cover, criss-crossed with orange-beige block letters.
