Description
Baselitz, Georg Artaud, Antonin Le Théâtre de Séraphin. Special edition featuring 8 full-page etchings by Georg Baselitz, and an extra suite of 8 additional hand-signed etchings printed in reddish-orange at Atelier AD, as well as a print of the autograph score by Wolfgang Rihm. Paris: éditions du Solstice, 2003. Folio. Loose double-page sheets, in the publisher’s simple white original envelopes. In a black linen slipcase with a red title label and an outer slipcase by Atelier Bernard Duval. *Le Théâtre de Séraphin* is an artist’s book from 2003 that combines literature, printmaking and music. The text is by Antonin Artaud, accompanied by eight full-page etchings by Georg Baselitz, printed in reddish-orange, and an unpublished score by Wolfgang Rihm, reproduced as a facsimile of his handwritten manuscript. Artaud’s text also appears in the Gallimard edition as an appendix to *Le Théâtre et son double*. The etchings depict parts of the human body, including a striking number of hands. The uniform red print lends the isolated limbs and gestures great intensity. This ties in with Artaud’s theatre, which relies on the body as a vehicle of expression. The etched lines and Rihm’s handwritten musical notation stand side by side as direct traces of the artist’s hand. Antonin Artaud (1896–1948) was a poet, actor and theatre theorist. In *Le Théâtre et son double* (1938), he developed the ‘Theatre of Cruelty’, which rejects the text as the centrepiece of the performance. His thinking had a lasting influence on 20th-century theatre, performance art and the visual arts. Georg Baselitz (1938–2026), born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz near Kamenz, was expelled from the East Berlin Academy of Fine Arts on grounds of ‘socio-political immaturity’ and went on to study in West Berlin. The human figure, often distorted and turned upside down, is the central theme of his work as a painter, sculptor and printmaker. Wolfgang Rihm (1952–2024), born in Karlsruhe, was one of the most prolific and most frequently performed contemporary composers, with over 500 works to his name. His own musical theatre piece, *Séraphin* (1994), also bears the name that Artaud gave to his text. Le Théâtre de Séraphin.
