Bob Marley – Music Official Funeral Service for the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley O.M. (Bob Marley – Berhane Selassie) (Light of the Trinity). Printed by the Government Printer, Duke Street, Kingston (Jamaica, 1981). 4 pp. Stapled. Extremely rare; printed in a small run for the mourners. Programme for the funeral service of the reggae musician, who died on 11 May 1981 at the age of 36. The service took place on Thursday, 21 May 1981. It began at 8.00 am and lasted until 9.00 am at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity (89 Maxfield Avenue, Kingston). This was followed at 11.00 am by the ceremony at the National Arena. His Eminence Abouna Yesehaq, Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the Western Hemisphere, is named as the celebrant. He was assisted by priests and deacons from the Church in Jamaica. The note specifies Ge’ez, Amharic and English as the languages of the service. Marley had been baptised by Yesehaq in November 1980; the name ‘Berhane Selassie’ derives from this baptism. According to contemporary reports, around 6,000 people attended the service at the National Arena. Among them was Merry Go Round.
