Dark brown, smoothed OEcrasé leather (marked ‘Euphorion Einband Hübel & Denck, Leipzig’) over five decorative bands with the title and date gold-stamped on a mauve inlaid background, richly ornamented gilt on the cover and spine; the front cover features three mauve inlaid squares, plus gilded fillets along the inner edges, gilded head edge and ribbon bookmark (spine and joints partly expertly restored, somewhat rubbed and with slight scuff marks). In a new paper slipcase.

Plate IV. - A book-artistically valuable edition of Heinrich Heine’s fragmentary narrative from 1824, featuring expressionist woodcuts including three illustrated initials by Budko, here in bold prints with intense blacks. - The elegant typesetting, retaining a slender, wide-margin layout, and the rich printing on voluminous, wide-margined Zanders handmade paper (with the ‘Einhorn’ watermark) were carried out by Otto von Holten, Berlin. - Endpapers slightly mottled with glue at the edges, with occasional light foxing; otherwise a well-preserved, untrimmed on both sides copy of this extremely collectable rarity: the elegant, hand-bound volume by Hübel & Denck, signed in the footbar of the rear endpaper, well protected by the slipcase.
