Paris, Michel, 1921. 3 leaves (2 text, drawing), unnumbered pp. 1–4 (half-title, justification, title page), pp. 5–198, 2 leaves (printing proofs, 1 text) 4°. Contemporary red half-maroquin binding with corners, on 4 raised bands with a gold-stamped title on the spine in the second of 6 compartments divided by gold-stamped geometric ornamentation; the covers feature gold-stamped filets along the leather edge and, like the endpapers (covered), featuring multicoloured paper marbled by hand, gold-edged top and ribbon bookmark (minimally bumped at the corners and edges).
One of 17 numbered copies of the deluxe edition on Japon Impérial (total print run 432 and 10 h.c.) – Monod I, 980. - Carteret IV, 59. - A superbly preserved copy from the second of five batches of the first illustrated edition, featuring Chimot’s morbidly lascivious etchings with sharp edges and deep black tones. Each plate is bound with a small silk cover printed with the title in red. According to the printer’s note, the plates were destroyed after the edition was produced. – A well-preserved copy in an attractive binding, with the original paperback cover bound in.
