Design Ibou, Paul Metamorphosis (illegible colour variation book). Antwerp, Monas, 1968. 2 text leaves, 3 silver-coloured and 1 black cardboard leaf, 14 white cardboard sheets with geometric cut-outs and 15 transparent, coloured plastic sheets. 4° (approx. 27.5 x 28.5 cm). Octavo with spiral binding in original silver-coloured slipcase with title on the cover (joints partly worn and torn), lined with purple velour. First edition. – One of 1,000 copies, signed by the artist in the colophon. - The Belgian graphic designer, printer, painter, sculptor and publisher Paul Vermeersch chose ‘Ibou’ as his pseudonym, both as a homonym (of ‘hibou’, meaning owl) and as an acronym for his title ‘Inventief Boek Ontwerper en Uitgever’ (Inventive Book Designer and Publisher). In his brief introduction, the artist explains that METAMORPHOSIS is created through the additive and subtractive turning and layering of the pages: “‘en zolang er gelezen wordt in dit boek der metamorfozen is geen wereld afgesloten’” (“And as long as this book of metamorphoses is read, no world is closed off”). – The reverse of the front cover features a photograph by Gerald Dauphin. – In good overall condition. First edition. – One of 1,000 copies, signed by the artist in the colophon. – Die-cut leaves alternating with transparent coloured plastic leaves.
