Description
Bindings Genet, Jean Haute surveillance. Paris, Les Cinéastes bibliophiles, 1947, 103 pp., (4) leaves, 8° Magnificent masterful binding in Art Deco style with applied covers of polymer with a metallic finish, alternating decoration of black shagreen, spine of iridescent black shagreen, title in palladium. With a slipcase in a slipcase. Signed: Florent Rousseau, 2013. One of eight copies of the special edition in masterful binding bearing the additional handwritten note ‘Copy by Jean Genet’ (GA 60 copies), all of which were reserved for non-commercial distribution and specifically for subscribers to ‘Cinéastes bibliophiles’. Jean Genet’s first play. In this ‘ideal’ enclosed space – for the play is set in a prison cell – ‘Green-Eye’, ‘Maurice’ and ‘Lefranc’ discover one another, form bonds and fight one another. What pits them against one another is their misfortune, that is to say, their crime: some have chosen it, others have suffered it. The world premiere took place in 1949 and was directed by the author. – A striking copy in a master binding.
