Selections from the Babylonian Talmud, translated by Jacob Fromer. With a magnificent chromolithographic double-page spread and chromolithographic book decorations by Joseph Budko. Berlin, Brandus, 169 pp., 3 pp. in original linen binding with gold-embossed fillets, corner fleurons and a centrepiece in the shape of a menorah; spine with rich gold embossing. (Minimally rubbed and with minor scuffing in places).
Kritter p. 158. – Sennewald 24,2. – Budko began studying at the art school in Vilnius as early as 1902. He settled in Berlin in 1909, where he learnt chasing and copperplate engraving. From 1910, he undertook studies at the training institute of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts and under Hermann Struck, where he was regarded as the latter’s favourite pupil. From the mid-1920s onwards, he began to devote himself more intensively to painting. Joseph Budko emigrated to Palestine in 1933, where he was director of the Bezalel School for Arts & Crafts in Jerusalem from 1934 to 1940. – A luxurious, wide-margined press print. Partly untrimmed. A fine copy.
