The Yellow Book. An Illustrated Quarterly. Vols. I–XIII (= all volumes published). With numerous illustrations. London, Elking Mathews and John Lane / Boston, Copeland & Day, 1894–1897. 8°. Yellow original cloth binding with black-printed illustrations (some pages heavily rubbed and bumped; spine of Vol. 1 with a missing section).
First edition. – Volume 1 bears a handwritten ownership note by Arnold K. Henry. – With labels from A. Makrocki Rare English Books and, in places, the publisher’s stamp. Stamp of the University Library of Düsseldorf. - *The Yellow Book* was a leading magazine of the British 1890s with strong links to Aestheticism and Decadence, and often featuring erotic and risqué content. It featured a wide range of literary and artistic genres, including poems, short stories, essays, book illustrations, portraits and reproductions of paintings. Aubrey Beardsley was the magazine’s first artistic director. Contributing artists included such luminaries as John Singer Sargent, Walter Sickert, Philip Wilson Steer, Henry James, H. G. Wells and William Butler Yeats. Although Oscar Wilde never published in *The Yellow Book*, he was associated with the magazine because Beardsley had illustrated his *Salomé* and because he was friends with many of the authors. – Margins slightly browned, some with foxing. Inner joints partly frayed. Overall, a very neat and well-preserved collection.
