Jugend. A Munich-based illustrated weekly magazine on art and life. Published by Georg Hirth; Editor: Fritz von Ostini. Vol. 1904, 2nd half; 1905–1916; and Vol. 191, 2nd half. 18 vols. With numerous illustrations and colour plates. Munich and Leipzig, Georg Hirth’s Art Publishing House and the Munich ‘Jugend’ Publishing House, 1904–1917. 4°. Half leather with gold-stamped titles (heavily rubbed and bumped, joints partly broken).
Diesch 2668 – Kirchner 15532 – *Die Jugend*, which was published from its foundation in 1896 until 1940, is regarded as the most important journal of the Art Nouveau movement of the same name, a term it helped to coin. It contained both satirical and politically critical texts and served, as it were, as a prominent forum for the artistic (commercial) graphics of its time. Thus, it brings together numerous Art Nouveau ornaments and illustrations, as well as influences from Impressionism. – A collection in good overall condition.
