Art Nouveau Klinger, Max Cupid and Psyche. A fairy tale by Apuleius. Translated from the Latin by Reinhold Jachmann. Illustrated with 46 original etchings and ornamented by Max Klinger. Munich, Theodor Stroefer, (1880–1881). 4 sheets, LXVIII pages. Folio. Hand-bound in dark brown morocco with gold-embossed fillets and floral gilding, rich gilt edging, gilt inner edges and three-sided (with minor scuff marks). First edition in a magnificent (unsigned) hand-bound cover. – Singer 64-109: “The delightful illustrations for *Amor and Psyche* are the only etched work by Klinger that truly illustrates a poet’s text.” The work, dedicated to Johannes Brahms, was published in a very small print run, as prints were only produced on demand. The 31 etched vignettes were printed on China paper and rolled flat; the 15 almost full-page etchings were printed on heavy paper, specially folded and protected with interleaves. – Inner joint slightly damaged, some pages with slight foxing. Art Nouveau. – Illustrated with 46 original etchings and ornamented by Max Klinger.
